All 3 times we chose conservative care. Each time successful. The last episode my sweet boy was down for 5 months before he was able to walk again. Acupuncture, physical therapy and lots of love and patience. I would do it all over again if I had to.

Hi Janet. To be clear, there is no reliable test for IVDD. Almost 100% of Dachshunds have at least one copy of the gene, yet only 25% experience back issues, so it’s not a good predictor. The back screening would be a more accurate way to determine how affected your Dachshund is by the disease/gene but, again, it’s not guarantee if a dog will experience a back problem or not. Back screening is suggested as a way to help reduce the risks of the disease over generations through selective breeding. But doing either for fun? I say why not. I’ve been curious myself.
